Last Wednesday night a woman was murdered at a bar on Avenida Coahuila in the Zona Norte area of Tijuana and 26 year old Logan Kelley, a US citizen and former collegiate basketball star, will be charged with her murder.
The police are not releasing much information yet surrounding the murder itself or the man who was arrested and accused of the crime but there are a lot of uncorroborated rumors circulating including one where the accused, who still must be formally arraigned, had supposedly commented to some of the bar employees that he was also a US marine.
The murder victim – identified as Isis Italia Montoya Romero – was only 19 years old and there are also some reports circulating that she might have been in a relationship with her accused assassin, with those reports going on to say that the accused reportedly first met the victim in the Mexican state of Hidalgo four years ago and is the father of her three year old son.
Again we want to be clear that these are rumors circulating in the local press and social media; they have not been confirmed officially.
Alleged assailant: college basketball star
Logan Kelley, originally from Ohio, played college basketball at the University of Montevallo in Alabama where he was considered one of the better players. He reportedly told some of the bouncers at Adelitas that he was a candidate for the 2017 NBA draft.
How his life went downhill from there, it’s hard to say.
Short and deadly timeline
The murder occurred shortly after 9 PM at the bar located on Avenida Coahuila in the Zona Norte neighborhood during working hours and while customers were still in the establishment.
The young victim was seen walking through the hallways to the private rooms of the bar, accompanied by her 3-year-old son nearby with Kelley following closely behind just moments before being attacked from behind by Kelley, reported to have thrust a knife into her neck.
According to witness statements, the young woman screamed for help and security personnel at the bar immediately grabbed Kelley and called 911.
The paramedics who first arrived on the scene just minutes later but were unable to help the victim, pronouncing her dead.
Kelley is being held in custody in a Tijuana jail and and will be formally arraigned by the State Attorney General’s Office.
