Day long trail hike in Las Delicias

My wife and a couple of our close friends have been pushing me to do another long weekend trip to Ensenada and it looks like Saturday will be spent up at the Guadalupe Valley with wine tasting and lots of food. For Sunday, after a lot of discussion, it was decided that we will go on a day long hike outside of town. My wife took charge of finding a good trail and last night she PM’d me with this suggestion:

Circuito Mesa RedondaLas Delicias, Baja California, Mexico

    Moderate•4.5(10) Length: 31.7 km • Est. 8h 42m

31.7-km loop trail near Las Delicias, Baja California. Generally considered a moderately challenging route, it takes an average of 8 h 42 min to complete. This trail is great for birding, hiking, and mountain biking. Dogs are welcome, but must be on a leash.

The route starts from the Kumiai Park, from East to West. It can be done both ways. It is important to mention that it goes through the skirt of Mesa Redonda but does not reach the top of it. Little shade, terrain with loose stone, gradual and constant elevation, in some sections with steep slopes. Bring at least 3 liters of water.

Looks to be a trail this group can handle and the photos l found look like a pretty interesting hike but I am not really that familiar with the area. Anybody here been up there and any tips on the drive out / parking as well as temperature differentials between start and upper altitude areas?

Although I know the general area, I have never been to that trail head. Let me see if we can’t generate some more responses – I’ll share this on Facebook…

That area gets pretty hot during the summer months and with that elevation climb could make for a very long day IMHO, even for better than average hikers. Would be much better in spring or late fall. If you want a nice trail for summer time, my wife and I hiked a trail that was suggested to us that takes off near the Mex3 – Libramiento connection and heads up behind Sauzal with a nice view and a refreshing Pacific breeze. I drew it out for you as best as I can remember but you will find that it’s very easy to follow once there.

Good point, although this has been a milder summer for the Ensenada and Ojos Negro area so far, temperatures can rise to over 100 degrees in the afternoon out there when it warms up.

The route behind Sauzal you posted I believe is much longer, jumping the Libramiento and continuing on for several miles in a NE direction as I remember. I rode it on a dirt back 20 or 25 years ago.

I shared this with the wife last night but she was slightly skeptical on the trail you suggested @mikel so she did some more searching and found it.

And you were right @juansoler , that trail does go farther past the highway.

I think you will enjoy the trail for this time of the year as it’s not too difficult with some very nice views and ocean breezes.

We did this trail a couple of years ago and it was pretty good – especially for a small group. Not very difficult at all and there are several hot springs. I think they charged us to use the trail but it wasn’t very expensive (less than $5 USD).

I looked at the photos n the link to the trail you shared and wondered if those ruins I saw are from an old mission?

I don’t think so, at least we didn’t see any signs. I believe it’s just an old house but it was pretty cool.

After more consultation with the group, several want to go down to the Bufadora so we decided on starting out that day with an abbreviated version of this hike nearby and then go shop and eat at the Bufadora. I do appreciate all the help and suggestions.
