While you should not have any problems finding a currency exchange kiosk (casa de cambio) at the border or in the airport where you arrive, it’s a good idea to have at least two to three thousand pesos (100-150 USD) on hand when you first arrive.

You’ll find that you will usually save money on everything by paying in pesos and if you do need more, your best exchange rates as well as safest way to obtain pesos are at an ATM machine located inside a bank.

And until you are able to find one, having pesos on hand will help ensure your vacation gets off to a good start – just be sure to keep one hand over the keypad when entering your pin to protect your account from the eyes of potential thieves!

*** And here’s an extra tip – if the ATM machine you use in Mexico asks you to approve an alternative exchange rate for your withdrawal, simply refuse the offered exchange rate and you will still get your cash that you requested; only that it will be at the exchange rate your bank already negotiated which is always a better rate of exchange.
