Low cost, high speed Internet will soon be widely available in every corner of the Baja Peninsula as Megazillionaires Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos battle to takeover the satellite broadband market; Musk with his Starlink brand and Bezos with his new Project Kuiper program.

Both projects aim to provide high speed Internet to the entire planet but are specifically targeting market areas where fiber-optic based broadband is not yet available and/or practical to reach currently at the expense of filling our skies with a significantly higher volume of “space junk”.

My brains telling me this is just a normal (and necessary) step of progress but my heart is wishing it could wait for another 30 or 40 years. We love to camp in some of Baja’s most remote deserts and coastal areas, frequently taking our scanning telescope on moonless weekends where we can search the clear, dark Baja sky for endless hours.

Somehow I don’t think it’s going to feel the same anymore with so many satellites in low orbit space. I had no idea they needed that many satellites to get the job done.

We’ll just have to see how good Elon really is at making those satellites.
