I made a recent overnight stop in Loreto and decided to have an early dinner. I was tired from driving since 4:00AM and wanted a good meal and drinks. I decided on The Market Restaurant at Villa del Palmar; I was looking for something nice but not too expensive and had read that it would meet my expectations.

Arriving, I would rate it casual-nice and the service from the moment I walked in was very friendly and attentive, and continued so throughout the evening. There weren’t many other people at that hour and they had just setup a a Caribbean style buffet. I chose to order from the menu instead. While the service and atmosphere were excellent, opening the menu I saw that it came at a high price.

I started off with a “Tequilajito” drink – delicious but at 250 pesos I limited myself to 2 and stuck with iced tea throughout the rest of the dinner. I ordered a dinner salad which was fresh and crispy, tampique style arrachera that was grilled exactly to my preference of medium-rare and finished with an order of cheese cake and two cups of coffee.

The total for the dinner before tip was a little over 1,800 pesos – about 90 dollars and with the tip of 400 pesos came to just over 2,200 pesos or about 110 dollars. The dinner was very nice but spending over 100 dollars to dine by myself, I expected something much more elegant and a much broader menu.

If you are a strict vegetarian you won’t have many options as the menu is mainly meat, pork, fish/seafood and chicken with soups, salads and a vegetarian enchilada your only choices.

It appeared that there was some musical entertainment setting up to play when I was leaving and maybe that was part of what I was paying for?

I rate this overall a 7 on a scale of 10, with the prices the only real negative. There are many other places you can have dinner in Loreto with good quality food and service and slightly less ambience for less than half the price.

1800 pesos – 90 dollars without tip in Mexico? By yourself??? That’s just wrong. I heard Loreto was expensive but I can feed my entire family a great meal in lots of nice places in other areas. What a waste of hard earned money.

Note to self – skip Loreto.

We love Loreto but it is definitely expensive. Looks to me like the developers there all got together and came up with a plan to build an upscale Cabo targeting the wealthy.
