Memorial Event for Coco

Many folks have contacted me in recent days, asking if there will be any type of memorial service for Coco as well as inquiring as to any plans the family has for his camp moving forward.

I spoke with several members of Coco’s family including his older brother Victor today, who is in charge of handling Coco’s affairs. I shared with him that many are interested in participating in such an event for Coco and asked him what their plans were.

He shared with me that they followed Coco’s wished to be cremated and are discussing their options going forward, including a possible public event at Coco’s Corner where his friends he met over the last several decades could come and pay their respects.

They are very open to the idea and asked for my help in gauging the number of people who might attend. To help them better organize such an event, please express your interest here:

The results will be shared with the family and I will share their plans in the coming days. I am sure you probably have a lot of questions about what is going to happen there at his camp, his guest books, etc and I will make a separate post about all of that very soon.

Please share this post to your Facebook feed as well as other related groups and forums to help get the word out and generate the best response.

    Thank you!

Thanks Ron for coordinating this. Coco touched the lives of a lot of people down here over his lifetime.

This is my first post here, I signed up to see what is being planned, and what might be needed to create some sort of memorial.

The replies are still coming in and I am happy to see some offer to help build a memorial to Coco at his camp. I have also gotten a lot of mail/messages over this with lots of questions and comments and I’ll try to address a few of those most common here…

I spoke with Coco’s family again today and they are willing to coordinate with us to organize the event but his older brother Victor (89 years old) who is in charge of taking care of Coco’s affairs expressed to me that it is too hot for him to make the trip to Coco’s Corner and most likely such an event would be later this fall, which is good as that will us lots of time to organize and give people some advance warning as to the date.

Coco’s family placed a caretaker at his camp to watch over things and they are working to secure all of hjis stuff including his guest books.

It appears the family would like to have the event and Coco’s memorial monument placed at his new location and I believe this is because that is where Coco passed on.

I will wait for a few more days to allow more responses to come in and I will then open up a discussion about the materials needed and logistics surrounding building his monument as well as a possible date, or at least range of dates..

Looking forward to learning more about this. I am headed that way soon and needed to find out if there was something new to get squared away before I left.

I agree that later would be better, and it just may force me to make two Baja runs this season. Oh darn it, but if I must, so be it!

Thanks @cousinjack for the offer – I will add you to the list. I will be updating this thread with the communications from the family and this might be a good place to open the discussion as to what we would like to see the memorial look like? I think the family is open to suggestions and would like to honor (as much as possible) requests from those of us who will be participating. I believe that they would like to place at least a portion of his ashes inside the monument.

    S
o what do you think should be incorporated into the monument design to best honor and remember Coco? Rocks from the area cemented together with a plaque listing Coco’s name and dates of birth/death or something more complex? Let’s hear your suggestions…

Coco entertained visitors from all over, so how about some rocks from all over? Large white quartz and petrified wood are available where I am in Northern CA. Just a thought though, it is really what the family wants.

I vote for early November, before the Baja 1000

I dunno, with the Baja 1000 and Turkey Day both in November, a third event might be a bit much for some people.

I think a monument made out of collage of broken down car and motorcycle parts with some pieces of his wheelchair would be appropriate and look pretty cool.

That might look good when first built but Baja reclaims any and all metal left outside. Over the years it would rust and break down and eventually there would be nothing left. Rock/concrete is a better long term option.

Planning for the event for cooler weather will bring more people but the comment about the Holidays and the Baja 1000 is also on target, October would be better.

I definitely believe that rock/concrete based materials would be best. Maybe we can spell out his name in concrete letters on the monument.
