We were asked when coming through security at SJD how many laptops, iPads, iPhones we had with us. Seems they wanted to charge an “electronics tax” if we were bringing in “over their limit.” Has anyone experienced this or can explain details of this new policy?

I have seen that when visiting several different countries in Latin America over the last couple of decades where the high duties on electronic imported items like TVs, cell phones, laptops and stereo gear make them very expensive in their domestic market. The idea is to discourage visitors from bringing such things with them to sell. A coworker I know takes 3 or 4 cell phones with her when going back home and basically pays for her airfare with what she makes with the proceeds.

Seriously? Who does she sell them to – does she go on a local Facebook Buy/Sell group where she’s traveling to?

That’s a smart idea. Probably easier for women over me to hide extra cell phones as I have never seen customs make a woman empty out her purse.
