CJ Barham, motorcycle stunt rider arrested in Rosarito and in TJ prison
Rosarito Beach, Baja California — A professional, motorcycle stunt rider from Sacramento is behind bars in Tijuana who is accused of evading arrest and possessing a handgun.
29-year-old CJ Barham has over 50,000 followers on instagram where he posts videos of stunts performed on his custom Harley Davidson.
He calls himself a “concrete cowboy” and has appeared at car and motorcycle shows, performing donuts, wheelies and other tricks for crowds.
But when he takes his show on public roadways, the stunts become illegal.
When he crossed the border into Mexico to attend a rally last month, his motorcycle ride turned into a police chase in Rosarito Beach.
“They were trying to knock CJ off his bike with their police trucks, and one managed to stop him. They jumped and pointed a pistol at him and he came off the embankment and crashed,” said CJ’s mother, Susan Barham.
The mother doesn’t approve of her son’s stunts on public streets, but when she learns she’s been accused of possessing a handgun in Mexico, she says she knows it’s being set up.
“That gun did not surface until CJ was taken into custody. There was no gun at the crime scene,” she said. “He has neither guns nor guns. He’s just a motorcyclist.”
According to the mother, the stunt rider’s father initially tried to interfere with the authorities in Tijuana. Susan Barham said, “When CJ said he had been arrested his father immediately got downstairs and took some cash with him and tried to pay the fine to get him out of jail.” She and father are divorced.
Handgun possession is a federal crime in Mexico, so CJ was transferred to the La Mesa prison in Tijuana.
Two weeks ago, his mother had come to visit him for four hours.
“He’s scared. He’s never been through something like this. So, he’s already lost 10 or 15 pounds in just 20 days. He eats soup everyday. He doesn’t get solid food,” she said .
Barham has hired a pair of lawyers in Tijuana to help him get his son released.
