Baja: Window to the South – 04/01/2022
Posted by BajaGringo on April 2, 2022 at 6:25 amIn this latest episode, Olga and Scott show us more of the cultural side of Tijuana, starting off with a great segment on CECUT in an interview with Vianka Santana, Director of CECUT. Another segment covers border wall art with Enrique Chiu who tells tells us all about his art and the Brotherhood Mural.
And then Scott takes us on another great segment of “Taco With Muchachos” where Scott and Francisco visit Carnitas Mr. Buches Shop and try some really tasty pork tacos!

I like the idea behind the show but the talk style show format is losing favor these days. More street / on-location segments are what this show needs. I think that Scott and Olga would be great together outside of the studio. I would use the the studio format to begin and end the show and the rest outside.

I’ve said this before – most people today aren’t into the old style talk show format. People have short attention spans and skip by the videos shot in studio with people just talking.

Yeah, that was my mom’s scene 20-30 years ago but today she doesn’t watch them anymore except for maybe The View, and that’s only because she likes to watch all the bickering! 😂

Let’s be proactive and share with them what you would like to see done differently with the show, and be as specific as you can so if they see this, they can perhaps come away with a good idea or two.
But let’s also share with them what you do like about the show / format / episodes to date.

I just checked out their video views since the series started and the trend is going down with each new episode, not up. Hopefully they see that too and make some needed changes.

I think Scott and Olga are great but would really shine together outside. For example the CECUT segment would have been a lot more interesting if they had filmed it on location at CECUT and while the video – image clips of the border art were good during that portion of the show, I think that it would have been even better had they filmed that segment actually visiting the border art while doing the interview.
The Tacos with the muchachos segments are always great but maybe add in some nicer restaurants as well. Olga would look great highlighting some of the shops and stores in Tijuana where you can find a variety of different things not readily available north of the border, or much more expensive.
Maybe even a segment at one of Tijuana’s professional sports teams events?

My wife summed it up perfectly – she watches a talk show today for only two reasons: either the hosts are famous stars or their guests are. And even better of BOTH are. And she still may switch to another channel after a couple of minutes if the discussion doesn’t keep her interested. No offense intended to either Scott or Olga but I think she hit the nail on the head as to why the idea isn’t taking off like they probably hoped it would. To keep people interested today in this era of short videos one after another, they would do much better outside of the studio with several short, 3 to 5 minute segments filmed on location.
Olga and Scott are both the right people for this type of show but just think they spend too much time just sitting around and listening to their guests talk. Not too many people will watch that for 30 minutes anymore. Sad, but that’s what’s happened to society.
Baja is a HUGE topic so maybe they just need to step outside of the box to find other ways to keep people interested.

I think that tourists want to see the parts filmed outside and Juan’s idea of having Olga do reviews of stores around Tijuana is great. My girlfriends in Tijuana and Ensenada would watch the show just for that!

One thought I just had was wondering if they are required to get a permit to film in the streets / on location in Tijuana? That could definitely complicate things.
-
As a tourist to Baja California, I can definitely say we prefer the on-location videos.
-
I have seen a couple of the episodes and tend to agree with the sentiment of less time on set and more time on location. Juan may have a point about permits and fees to film on location which could be a factor, although I don’t imagine they would be interrupting traffic or anything so that would make a permit necessary.
But this is Mexico, so who knows?

I spent some time to watch all of the episodes this afternoon ( I admit that I did FF thru some segments that got a little long) and my personal opinion is that this entire show could be done outdoors and would probably be a lot better for it. If the location doesn’t have it, all they need to do is bring a small table, some comfy patio chairs and maybe an umbrella if it’s really hot. They can move those from location to location where they are filming and presenting a particular tourist venue and I think it would improve their videos 100%. I would also like to see a segment once in awhile covering some of the local nightlife.

You should forward this thread to them. I think they would appreciate the honest critique.

I see they are making some tweaks to the show but I continue to believe they have the balance wrong on time on set vs on location. But that’s just me.
