An international airport in Guerrero Negro?

Personally, the selfish side of me would love to have an airport giving us easy access to areas like Asuncion and Abreojos but I wonder if so many more people visiting would have too much of a negative impact? I mean, isn’t the remoteness a big part of the charm?

Probably but we can’t wall off areas simply because people can harm sensitive habitat. That’s why we have government agencies whose job it is to implement policies and programs to manage a healthy balance.

I get that but what concerns me is the Mexican government has a very inconsistent record on enforcement of environment protections. But I do get it (and support) that this will be a big $$$ boost to the people there.

That would be a serious game-changer for central Baja.

Game changer indeed! I wonder though how long before this realistically would ever be built?

I can’t imagine any sooner than 10 years. Mexican politicians love to talk a good thing to death and squeeze as much political reward as possible out of a good idea before ever actually voting to approve it, much less provide funding for the project.

I can see how it would bring more people but we’ll still drive down – can’t bring a quad and my other toys on an airplane.

There are a lot of Baja veteran travelers like you who think the exact same thing. But this airport is not designed for people like you or me but for people who go to Cabo and Loreto. Think people with money who want something remote, different and exotic but would not be caught dead driving through Camalu, Vizcaino or Ciudad Constitución. There are a lot more of us but they have a lot more money than all of us together. And that is what counts here.

Now suddenly an airport doesn’t sound all that great.

So do those who only come down to visit once in awhile and want to keep it remote and “pristine” have the right to dictate what development of an area can take place for the people who live there and would benefit from that same development?

Maybe the governor should take a poll?

And who would he poll? All the residents of BCS? Only those in the region that would be affected by the poll? Travelers?

I hope this proposal actually becomes reality, that would be wonderful for the people who live there as well as tourists.
