US Auto Insurance

I am trying to find a company that will give me auto insurance in the US. One that I can turn on and turn off as I only go to the states maybe 6 times a year for no longer than two weeks at a time. I do have current Mexican full coverage. I will need full coverage in the States. I also have US mailing address. Hope someone can give me some info.

Thanks in advance for your help and ideas

So you live in Mexico full time? If so, I think your best option would be to switch to Baja registration for your vehicle. It’s cheap these days I hear only costing a few hundred bucks under a special program. Then you can get a bi-national insurance policy which costs only a tiny bit more than a national policy for Mexico only. Plus, you will save on annual registration costs too.

If your car/truck is registered in the US or Canada, I don’t know of any options for such coverage but if you have a Baja/Mx registered car there are such specific date type options they sell you near the border before crossing north. I agree with Mikel, you’d be better with local plates if this is where you live most of the time.

I have seen people selling policies at the border and always wondered how legit they were?

Thanks for the input. Was able to find insurance in the US that I can stop and go as needed. Farmers insurance will do that. I have a resident mailing address in AZ so I think that’s why it worked out ok.

Yeah, I don’t think California and many other states allow you to do that.

A good friend of mine living half the year in La Paz and the other half in Wyoming sold her Wyoming registered vehicle and bought a 2 year old BMW for a very good price with a factory extended warranty included in Tijuana last year. When she got down to La Paz she changed the BC registration to BCS and was able to get full coverage insurance that covers her both in the US and Mexico.
She is saving nearly half on the insurance and about 60% on the annual registration costs. I am thinking of doing the very same thing – less hassle and save money too!

Don’t the cops hassle her when she’s home in Wyoming for driving a car with Mexican plates?

No, she just tells them that her permanent home is in Mexico and she’s there visiting. As long as her vehicle is current on the tags and her Mexican drivers license is current, there is nothing they can do. She went through this a couple of times with local cops there.

for those who have SD drivers license (and residency) to go along with their SD plates anyone looked into SD auto insurance? any savings to be had there? (buying a yearly SD package instead of buying short term u.s. ins everytime you cross north)

With the ongoing threat to force those of us with Permanent Resident status to only drive locally plated vehicles, wouldn’t it be easier and cheaper to go with local registration?

we’re talking about U.S. auto insurance here an alternative to buying short term u.s. ins either at the border or from your mexican broker (daily ins adds up quickly)
