I have a good friend who is a successful entrepreneur in La Paz share with me recently that his daughter had been trying to convince him to allow her to enroll to pursue a degree in journalism. They had argued for months and he finally convinced her to enroll in Medicine instead.
When I asked him how he convinced her he said he finally made her see that being a journalist would probably get more people killed when she reported on cartel activity – cartel members, police, politicians, innocent bystanders and perhaps even herself and/or her family.
Going into Medicine she could help save lives and it was much more likely that her patients would listen to and believe her opinions that she shared with them as their doctor than if she wrote them in a newspaper.
Mexican wisdom.
