Looks like somebody finally convinced him that his stupid idea of coddling the cartels wasn’t working. Might have been the Mexican voters who gave him record support after he was elected but is now come down from the clouds and dipping down into territory of previous president public opinion ratings.

Abrazos no balazos was a serious program? I had thought it was just a slogan given to him by his political opponents in light of his failures to stop crime in Mexico? You would think that the voters would revolt? Most Mexicans I talk to are in favor of getting tougher on crime.

It was and has not been a popular idea with many elected representatives from the Morena party breaking ranks with the president and publicly disagreed over the policy.

No it’s not and not even AMLO loudest supporters here in our area agreed with the policy.

Yeah, that hugs idea made zero sense and made him like he was in collusion with the bad hombres.

But this still doesn’t solve what I think is a much bigger problem – Mexico’s revolving door system with arrested criminals. Today, if you are arrested and no violence was alleged, a criminal can expect to be released with 24-48 hours at most with several accumulating multiple arrests and releases while still waiting to face trial on the very first arrest.

I am quite sure the cartels will be disappointed to hear this.

Corruption is widespread and there are a lot of people who benefit from the cartel’s work on both sides of the border and including some wearing law enforcement uniforms as well as elected officials in three piece suits.

The abrazos no balazos method was a very stupid one as it gave criminals the idea that they are able to get away with anything. And you correctly mentioned our new criminal justice system that turns criminals loose back on the streets (sometimes even the same day they are arrested) and u understand why the crime problem is so serious in Mexico.
