Over the years we have learned that when heading south and trying to pack something that we’d prefer that the people at the border didn’t see, we always try to pick the place they’d least likely look without it being obvious that we were trying to hide it, always leaving us with the “dumb gringo excuse” option of not knowing we needed to declare it. We often bring lots of used clothing down but after having several large bags confiscated (I still don’t understand why) we now just fold it all carefully and pack it with our own clothing, taking along very little for ourselves and mostly just for the people we give it to. We tell the agent we want to stay for a few months if they ever ask why so much clothing?
