Miguel AguiƱiga, the Secretary of Tourism for Baja California is now projecting for the count of visitors this year to exceed the previous numbers prior to the pandemic, forecasting some 30 million tourists in the state this year. If that forecast holds up, it would mean an increase of over 7% when compared to the 28 million visitors recorded back in 2019.
AguiƱiga mentioned the important role of the state’s “Bienvenido a Baja California” (Welcome to Baja California) campaign, which will highlight popular attractions in areas of music, food and the amazing and truly unique landscapes and scenery as well as sporting and recreational activities, wine and artisan beer.

The ad campaign is focusing on three key markets with the first being the U.S. Southwest – Southern California, Nevada and Arizona – collectively representing 30% of the travelers to Baja California each year on average.
The second key market is the local market, inviting Baja Californians to choose tourism in their own state over traveling abroad or even to other regions of Mexico, representing today approximately 35% of visitors within the state.
Visitors from the national market are the third key market, representing nearly the same number of visitors as the local market and AguiƱiga shared that he plans to focus his attention on the mainland’s largest cities of Guadalajara, LeĆ³n, QuerĆ©taro, Aguascalientes, Mexico City and Monterrey.
The state official explained of a popular concept his agency will promote called “dos naciones – dos vacaciones” (two nations – two vacations) where Mexicans are invited to visit the Southern California area as well as Tijuana, Rosarito, Ensenada and the Guadalupe Valley, taking advantage of the Cross Border Xpress (CBX) point of entry.
Wine Tours
The Secretary of Tourism pointed out that travelers from the United States choose to visit Baja California for a number of reasons and activities including elective surgeries, dental work and business reasons, but increasingly for the food and wine sectors, reminding us that the vineyards in the state of Baja California today now represent 70% of Mexico’s annual wine production.
In closing, AguiƱiga shared that Baja California is working hard to reestablish international airline routes into the state, including a non-stop scheduled flight with China, admitting that vital connection may not be possible to activate again until 2023.
