The e-commerce giant Amazon just announced the opening of a new distribution center in Tijuana, Baja California, the eleventh to open in Mexico, with the goal of offering improved service to its customers in the region.
The company hopes to improve the delivery times for their products to the northwestern region of the country which includes the state of Baja California.
The new construction covers nearly a quarter million square feet and will stock over one million different products where Amazon collaborators will collect, pack and ship the orders.
Diego Méndez de la Luz, General Director of Operations at Amazon Mexico, explained that the expansion of operations in the country reflects the brand’s commitment to its existing customers as well as continue to grow its market share.

Faster Delivery
The new shipping center will benefit Prime members with same-day delivery to Tijuana with overnight delivery services available to Mexicali, Tecate, Ensenada and Rosarito.
Deliveries areas further south of Ensenada and Mexicali will take perhaps a day or two longer.
The company expects for the delivery services to the extended areas to continue to improve in the coming months and should be able to expect a maximum delivery time to most areas of 48 hours by next year.
Controversy
The opening of the new distribution center is not without controversy as some have criticized the arrival of Amazon, accusing the company of taking away market share from smaller, local retailers as well as their decision to build the multi-million dollar facility located right next door to the impoverished neighborhood of El Cañón del Padre.

Responding to the criticism, Méndez de la Luz explained that the business model of Amazon is to help small and medium size companies achieve access to a much larger, global market and has specific plans to incorporate local companies from the northwestern region of Mexico into it’s sales platform.
As far as the choice of location for the new distribution center, he shared that the new facility has been welcomed by many leaders in the community including the mayor of Tijuana.
Amazon will be offering full time, good paying jobs to the local community including the residents of the neighboring community of El Cañón del Padre, right next door.
The company will be hiring for a wide range of positions in operations, finance and human resources, among others. Candidates may apply through the www.amazon.jobs platform.
Currently, the operation of the e-commerce giant in Mexico is made up of eleven distribution centers and 27 delivery stations for local logistics services.
